Hello! Happy October! The time seems to have run away from me! So much has happened since May!
The Atkinson's added another family member! Miss Jocelyn Rose was born August 15th, 2012 at 9:15am. She was 6lbs 15oz, 19in long. She looks JUST like her big sister!! So i need to document my birth story...so bear with me!
I'll start at 38weeks...
My doctor wanted me to go in for an ultrasound since she did a cervix check and baby wasn't low enough to feel her head. So she wanted to make sure baby was head down. I was really hoping kiddo was, cuz i wasn't thrilled with the idea of a C-section. I went in and had the ultrasound done. All was looking good, but my doc called a couple days later and said the radiologist saw something concerning on the scans. Looks like either a cyst on one of her kidneys or she has a really full bladder. We were told not to worry we would have it checked out at the hospital when she was born. So we put it out of our minds for the time being since there was nothing we could do at that time. So we will come back to this...
It had been an interesting two weeks, i was now 39weeks along and having contractions. They hurt and were strong. I went in to L&D twice before her actual birth. At 39 weeks, i was SURE she was going to come since my doc went out of town for that whole week. When i went in for my 39week check up on July 31st i was going to have him strip my membranes, but baby was too far up. So we wait... but then on that thursday things started to heat up and my contractions really hurt, so off we went. Called my parents to take Kylie and headed to L&D...false alarm. Not strong enough, no progression. Sent me home on a relaxer, which knocked me out all day on friday and pretty much stopped all activity.
So i made my 40 week appt with my doctor for August 7th, my due date. She still couldn't strip my membranes cuz baby was too high up. Not much change was happening in the dilation area. Then Friday the 10, we were back into L&D, my contractions had started up again. My back hurt, i was miserable and crabby!!The only person i wanted to talk to was derek, everyone else really annoyed me for some reason. Once again i was sent home...
I went in on August 14th at 10am for my 41 week appt...now i was over due. Time to set up an induction! Medical induction is 41 weeks and 1 day...so induction was scheduled for August 15th. I was to call the next morning to make sure there was room for me, and head in! I also had her strip my membranes, which this time was possible since baby was really low!
My dad had Kylie since i didn't want her in the room when they did a cervical check at the doctors. After having my membranes stripped, the contractions started coming really fast and hard, so i called Derek and at 4pm on the 14th we went to L&D...only to be sent home AGAIN! But they sent me home with precocet to relax me and get me to sleep...it was 9pm when we got home that night.
The percocet made me loopy and took the edge off the contractions. I took a bath, ate some cereal and headed to bed. Only to be woken up at by contractions at 11...i held off till 2am and then woke derek up. These were not stopping and i could hardly breathe through them! We packed everything up and headed in, this time i told derek to drop me off at the ER entrance...i could not walk up to L&D.
The poor guys at the ER desk...i walked in, they saw me and asked if i was headed to L&D, all i could do is nod my head! Another guy asked if i needed a ride, i nodded again, then started crying! Derek was still parking the car at this point.
So i get up to L&D, get all hooked up and things happened fairly quickly. I was "in labor" for 7 hours and pushed for 15 mins. Got my epidural when i was 5cm dilated, and it felt GREAT! So at 9am August 15th i was fully dilated... my doctor comes in and tells me it's go time! It was SO much different than an induction, i could feel the contractions and when i needed to push. Childbirth is one of the coolest experiences i have ever had!
At 9:15am on August 15th Miss Jocelyn Rose Atkinson was born...
Now the next day they took her to have an ultrasound done of her kidneys. That' when they noticed she had not peed yet, so they drained her bladder. She had 300ml in there, the equivalent of a can of soda...an infant her size should have maybe 20ml in there. She was/is a medical mystery! When the pediatric urologist was
notified, he said his jaw hit the floor! He instructed the hospital staff to put a foley blub catheter in her and he would see us on Monday. So we were sent home with our daughter and a little disoriented since this was a new thing for us.
We weren't home for an hour when Jocelyn pooped and our came the cath. So off we went to Children's ER to have it replaced. Turned out, the hospital staff at North Memorial didn't use a foley bulb...a foley bulb had a little balloon on the end which is inflated after placement so it can't be pulled out. So after a few hours at Children's, we FINALLY got home. We were nervous for every diaper change, and couldn't wait till our monday appt to hopefully get some answers.
So Monday came...Jocelyn was not even a week old and had to have a VCUG. They loaded up her bladder with a dye solution to see if they could see anything. All looked normal except she couldn't void and she had a larger bladder. We decided that if she didnt't start voiding on her own we would do an MRI. So the doctor had his Nurse teach us how to cath her and we were sent home with the instructions to cath her every 6 hours...then we went down to every 3 hours to keep her bladder smaller. Cathing an infant is no fun. I had a hard time, especially after she got a UTI/bladder infection.
But after 2 weeks of cathing her...she started peeing on her own!! So now instead of an MRI, we will have another ultrasound in a month and hopefully we find nothing!
well, both are awake now and typing with one hand sucks...so till the next update!
Love,
The Atkinsons
